Alex Thomas - Biography

I began playing the piano aged seven, and first picked up a cornet when I was ten. My brass playing career began with the Standish Brass Band, progressing through the ranks, I then joined the Skelmersdale Prize Band where I became the principal cornet player. In 1998 I moved to the famous Besses O'Th' Barn Band, and after two years in the ranks, was promoted to principal cornet in 2000.

In 2002, I joined to the Yorkshire Building Society Brass Band. The band won many prestigious titles during the years which followed, including the European Championship in 2003 and 2004, The British Open Championship in 2003, and the All England Masters Championship in 2004. During this time they also recorded many award winning CDs, and the band became the number one ranked brass band in the world.

I have performed as a soloist throughout the UK, in America, Canada, across Europe, in Australia and in Japan, as well as being a soloist on BBC Radio 2's "Listen to the band" programme. My most coveted title so far came in 2004 when I won the British Open Solo Championships, as well the Best Bb Cornet title, which allowed me to travel to Australia, representing Britain in the Ern Keller International Brass Soloist festival.

I am a graduate of Salford University, where I gained a first class BA (Music) hons, with distinction in performance. I currently work as a freelance musician, and as a brass tutor for Wigan Instrumental Teaching Provision.
